Get a Whiter Smile

Think over-the-counter teeth whitening products are giving you the whitest smile you can get? Think again. Professional teeth whitening will give you the best whitening results. The products dentists use to whiten your teeth will be more powerful than what you can purchase over-the-counter. Dr. Joseph Zeigler and Dr. Nina Zeigler are some of the finest dentists in St. Louis, MO. They offer professional solutions for patients who want a brighter smile.

Causes of Dental Stains

Poor oral hygiene, excessive fluoride use, and certain medications can stain your teeth. Other factors that can cause tooth discoloration include dark-colored beverages, tobacco use and certain foods. Several diseases that affect tooth enamel and dentin can also cause tooth discoloration.

In-Office Bleaching

In-office teeth whitening is a revolutionary procedure that uses a strong whitening agent and light source to speed up the whitening process. In-office teeth whitening can lighten your teeth by up to eight shades. Results from the treatment are immediate, and because a dentist is involved, the process is completely safe.

At-Home Whitening

Dispensed by licensed dentists, professional at-home teeth whitening kits consist of placing a bleaching gel in a dental tray that has been custom-fitted for your mouth by a dental practitioner. Some dental trays are worn for an hour, others through the night. Professional at-home whitening kits produce fantastic results in 1 to 2 weeks of use.

Benefits of a White Smile

Profes

sional teeth whitening can whiten your smile, enhance your appearance, and improve the quality of your life. A white smile can also boost your self-confidence, which carries into the many different aspects of your life.
Teeth Whitening Consultation

If you have healthy gums and teeth, you may be a candidate for professional teeth whitening. Only your dentist can determine if professional teeth whitening is suitable for you after performing an exam to ensure proper health. Patients with tooth decay or gum disease are poor candidates for teeth whitening. These issues need to be addressed before seeking cosmetic treatments.

SkaterAdamRipponsWorld-ClassSmile

Team USA figure skater Adam Rippon became one of the breakout stars of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea last month. But it wasn’t just his acrobatics on the ice that dazzled—it was also his bright smile. As it turns out, the 28-year-old skater had prepared for his big moment on the world stage not only by practicing his jumps…but also by whitening his teeth.

Teeth whitening is a great way to prepare for a special day: a wedding, graduation or any time you want to look your best. Compared to many other cosmetic dental treatments, teeth whitening is less expensive and takes fewer office visits to achieve noticeable results.  It all starts with a dental exam, where we will make sure your tooth discoloration is not the result of an underlying dental issue that needs treatment. We can also give you a better idea of what kind of results you can expect from various bleaching methods.

Professional in-office whitening treatments offer the fastest and most dramatic results. Using concentrated bleaching solutions, it’s often possible to lighten teeth up to 10 shades in a single hour! Yet we always take care to protect the sensitive soft tissues of your mouth (gums, lips, etc.) from the powerful bleaching solutions.

We can also prepare a take-home kit that will allow you to achieve similar results at home, though the process will take longer (usually a few weeks). We will provide you with bleaching trays that are custom-made from a model of your mouth for a precise fit, along with bleaching gel to use at home. What’s great about the trays is that you can give yourself a touchup treatment months (or even years) later by getting another tube of bleach from the dental office.

When you smile, do you take care to hide your teeth? Many people who have discolored or stained teeth are prone to this habit, as they teeth whiteningdon't want to show off a flawed smile. But with teeth whitening from your Saint Louis, MO dentists, Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler, a bright and beautiful smile can be yours! Learn how whitening erases years of staining, leaving a luminous smile in its place!

How do teeth become stained?

Although teeth look and feel smooth, they're covered in microscopic grooves and pits, much like how your skin has pores. Over time, these tiny crevices can trap food particles that can collectively make the teeth appear yellow, brown or just dull-looking. Coffee, tea, curry, and tobacco products are usually the most notorious culprits. Because these little furrows and the particles within them are so tiny, regular brushing can't clear them away.

How does teeth whitening work?

Your Saint Louis dentist will start your process to whiter teeth by applying a peroxide based gel on the surface of the teeth that show when you smile. When the peroxide interacts with the natural chemicals on your teeth, it begins to produce oxygenated bubbles, which are small enough to penetrate the grooves in your enamel and break up the stain-causing particles into even smaller pieces, which allows them to be rinsed away after your whitening procedure is complete. This usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour and the results can last well over a year.

Can't I whiten my teeth at home?

While there are many over-the-counter whitening treatments available for purchase, they aren't as concentrated as the professional-grade products used by your Saint Louis dentist. Although the store-bought whitening products will eventually whiten your teeth, it will take much longer than the one short appointment with us, and the results won't last nearly as long before you'll need to buy more.

If you'd like to enhance your teeth with teeth whitening, the world's most popular cosmetic dental procedure, contact us to make an appointment with Dr. Joseph Zeigler or Dr. Nina Zeigler in St. Louis, MO today!

You can improve your smile with dental crowns and a teeth whitening procedure. St. Louis, MO, dentists, Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler, teeth whiteningshare a few details about these popular cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Versatile crowns offer many benefits

Crowns are equally effective at restoring a broken tooth as they are concealing bumps or chips. Crowns, or caps as they're commonly known, are designed to fit on top of a tooth. Because they're hollow, they slide over the tooth and are used to provide strength and stability, hide imperfections or change the shape of a tooth.

Crowns must be strong enough to resist breaking when you bite into a raw carrot, but light enough that they won't be uncomfortable. Porcelain, ceramic and resin are frequently used to create crowns because these materials are not only tough and lightweight but also resemble tooth enamel.

Dentists use crowns to treat several dental problems, including:

  • Weakness: A substantial part of your tooth structure is removed when you need a large filling or a root canal. Crowns absorb biting forces, keeping your weakened tooth safe from fracturing.
  • Cracks: Cracks in a tooth may look harmless, but those small lines can threaten the health of your tooth. If you don't get a crown, your tooth may break when you take a bite of a sandwich one day.
  • Short Teeth: Short teeth affect your appearance and may change your bite. If you don't lengthen a short tooth with a crown, you may find it more difficult to chew and may begin to experience jaw pain, stiffness and headaches.
  • Unattractive Teeth: Crowns are also used to conceal twisted, chipped, discolored or oddly shaped teeth.

Teeth whitening offers immediate results

Teeth whitening, a simple way to enhance your smile, can be completed during a one-hour appointment at our St. Louis office. Hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach stains that discolor the outer layer of your teeth. After just one whitening session, many people notice a significant improvement. In fact, your teeth may be three to eight shades brighter after your whitening session.

You can expect your teeth to stay whiter for up to five years after teeth whitening. Avoiding substances that stain teeth, such as tobacco products and darkly pigmented foods and drinks will help you keep your teeth white.

Are you interested in improving your smile with crowns or teeth whitening? Call St. Louis, MO, dentists, Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler at (314) 872-7590 to schedule an appointment.

KathyBatesPlaysItSmartWithProfessionalTeethWhitening

Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates knows how important it is to present your best face to the world — and one of the most important features of that face is a beaming smile. But there came a point when she noticed something was a little off. “I've always had good teeth, but it seemed to me as I was getting older that they weren't looking as good,” Kathy explained in a recent interview with Dear Doctor magazine.

That's when she decided it was time to take action. Kathy had orthodontic treatment when she was in her fifties, and she keeps her smile bright with tooth whitening treatments. She uses a kit provided by her dentist with a safe, effective whitening solution.

Of course, a bright, healthy smile looks great anywhere — whether you're on the red carpet or “off the grid.” And you don't have to be a Hollywood star to have professional whitening treatments. In fact, teeth whitening is one of the most popular and affordable cosmetic treatments modern dentistry offers.

The basic options for professional teeth whitening include in-office bleaching or take-home kits. Both types of dentist-supervised treatments offer a safe and effective means of getting a brighter smile; the main difference is how long they take to produce results. A single one-hour treatment in the office can make your teeth up to ten shades lighter — a big difference! To get that same lightening with at-home trays, it would take several days. On the plus side, the take-home kit is less expensive, and can achieve the same results in a bit more time.

It's important to note that not all teeth can be whitened with these treatments. Some teeth have intrinsic (internal) stains that aren't affected by external agents like bleaches. Also, teeth that have been restored (with bonding or veneers, for example) generally won't change color. And you can't necessarily whiten your teeth to any degree: Every tooth has a maximum whiteness, and adding more bleach won't lighten it beyond that level. Most people, however, find that teeth whitening treatments produce noticeable and pleasing results.

What about those off-the-shelf kits or in-the-mall kiosks? They might work… or they might not. But one thing's for sure: Without a dentist's supervision, you're on your own. That's the main reason why you should go with a pro if you're considering teeth whitening. We not only ensure that your treatment is safe — we can also give you a realistic idea of what results to expect, and we will make sure that other dental problems aren't keeping you from having a great-looking smile.

How often does Kathy Bates see her dentist for a checkup and cleaning? “I go about every four months,” she noted. “I'm pretty careful about it.” And if you've seen her smile, you can tell that it pays off.
