Find out more about this popular dental restoration and how it can benefit smiles.

A crown is one of the most common dental restorations that our St. Louis, MO, dentists Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler place. A crown can crownsbe used to fix teeth and handle other dental problems. Of course, not everyone understands what a crown is designed to do and why it can benefit your smile. If you want to learn more about dental crowns then you’ve come to the right place.

What is a dental crown?

Just as a helmet is worn to protect your head while biking or playing sports, a crown is designed to protect a damaged or weak tooth. By placing the crown around the tooth, it preserves its natural structure and strengthens the tooth. It can also be used to improve the shape and appearance of a tooth.

Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials but the most commonly used material is porcelain because it most closely resembles tooth enamel. Our St. Louis, MO, cosmetic dentists pride themselves on creating dental restorations that look as close to real teeth as possible. A crown will even be matched to the shade of your smile so that it blends right in.

When is a dental crown needed?

There are many instances in which a person can benefit from getting a dental crown. You may need to get this restoration if,

  • You have a tooth that is severely decayed
  • A dental filling can no longer fully support a tooth’s natural structure
  • You are dealing with a cracked, chipped or fractured tooth
  • You have a poorly shaped or severely discolored tooth
  • You are replacing a missing tooth or teeth with a dental implant or bridge

How is a dental crown placed?

As with most dental restorations, a crown will be custom made based on measurements taken of your smile. Before we can take measurements, we will first need to prep the tooth for the crown. This requires us to remove tooth enamel to reshape the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Since we may have to remove a substantial amount of enamel, this is performed under local anesthesia.

Once the tooth is prepped then we will take impressions of your tooth before placing a temporary crown. It can take up to one week or more to get your crown. Once your crown has been made, you will come back into our office so that we can remove the temporary crown and cement your permanent crown into place.

There have been a number of revolutionary developments in dental technology in the last few decades, from dental implants to tooth-dental crownscolored fillings and Invisalign clear aligner trays. Fortify Your Teeth with Dental Crowns in Saint Louis, MO

Crowns are one of the most effective dental restorations because they can be used to both replace a missing tooth, or strengthen a badly damaged or decayed tooth that might otherwise have to be extracted. When a cavity is too large to be repaired with a filling, a crown can restore function and cosmetic appearance, and protect as much of the remaining healthy tooth surface as possible.

How Dental Crowns Work

Dental crowns cover the damaged tooth to improve its function and aesthetic appearance. Crowns are custom designed for the best fit, so the dentist will design the crown to match the color and texture of your teeth for a natural finish. Once in place, a good dental crown is virtually impossible to distinguish from the rest of your teeth. With good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, crowns can last for a minimum of five to ten years, often longer.

What is a Dental Bridge?

If you are missing a tooth, a crown can be designed to fill in the gap. A dental bridge consists of the initial crown and two additional crowns on either side, which are placed over the teeth on either side of the missing tooth (also known as abutment teeth) to secure the crown in place.

You can improve your smile with dental crowns and a teeth whitening procedure. St. Louis, MO, dentists, Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler, teeth whiteningshare a few details about these popular cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Versatile crowns offer many benefits

Crowns are equally effective at restoring a broken tooth as they are concealing bumps or chips. Crowns, or caps as they're commonly known, are designed to fit on top of a tooth. Because they're hollow, they slide over the tooth and are used to provide strength and stability, hide imperfections or change the shape of a tooth.

Crowns must be strong enough to resist breaking when you bite into a raw carrot, but light enough that they won't be uncomfortable. Porcelain, ceramic and resin are frequently used to create crowns because these materials are not only tough and lightweight but also resemble tooth enamel.

Dentists use crowns to treat several dental problems, including:

  • Weakness: A substantial part of your tooth structure is removed when you need a large filling or a root canal. Crowns absorb biting forces, keeping your weakened tooth safe from fracturing.
  • Cracks: Cracks in a tooth may look harmless, but those small lines can threaten the health of your tooth. If you don't get a crown, your tooth may break when you take a bite of a sandwich one day.
  • Short Teeth: Short teeth affect your appearance and may change your bite. If you don't lengthen a short tooth with a crown, you may find it more difficult to chew and may begin to experience jaw pain, stiffness and headaches.
  • Unattractive Teeth: Crowns are also used to conceal twisted, chipped, discolored or oddly shaped teeth.

Teeth whitening offers immediate results

Teeth whitening, a simple way to enhance your smile, can be completed during a one-hour appointment at our St. Louis office. Hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach stains that discolor the outer layer of your teeth. After just one whitening session, many people notice a significant improvement. In fact, your teeth may be three to eight shades brighter after your whitening session.

You can expect your teeth to stay whiter for up to five years after teeth whitening. Avoiding substances that stain teeth, such as tobacco products and darkly pigmented foods and drinks will help you keep your teeth white.
