A crown is one of the most common dental restorations that our St. Louis, MO, dentists Drs. Joseph and Nina Zeigler place. A crown can crownsbe used to fix teeth and handle other dental problems. Of course, not everyone understands what a crown is designed to do and why it can benefit your smile. If you want to learn more about dental crowns then you’ve come to the right place.

What is a dental crown?

Just as a helmet is worn to protect your head while biking or playing sports, a crown is designed to protect a damaged or weak tooth. By placing the crown around the tooth, it preserves its natural structure and strengthens the tooth. It can also be used to improve the shape and appearance of a tooth.

Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials but the most commonly used material is porcelain because it most closely resembles tooth enamel. Our St. Louis, MO, cosmetic dentists pride themselves on creating dental restorations that look as close to real teeth as possible. A crown will even be matched to the shade of your smile so that it blends right in.

When is a dental crown needed?

There are many instances in which a person can benefit from getting a dental crown. You may need to get this restoration if,

  • You have a tooth that is severely decayed
  • A dental filling can no longer fully support a tooth’s natural structure
  • You are dealing with a cracked, chipped or fractured tooth
  • You have a poorly shaped or severely discolored tooth
  • You are replacing a missing tooth or teeth with a dental implant or bridge

How is a dental crown placed?

As with most dental restorations, a crown will be custom made based on measurements taken of your smile. Before we can take measurements, we will first need to prep the tooth for the crown. This requires us to remove tooth enamel to reshape the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Since we may have to remove a substantial amount of enamel, this is performed under local anesthesia.

Once the tooth is prepped then we will take impressions of your tooth before placing a temporary crown. It can take up to one week or more to get your crown. Once your crown has been made, you will come back into our office so that we can remove the temporary crown and cement your permanent crown into place.
